Title: Pioneer & Aberdeen Teachers receive Qwest grants

Teachers from the Pioneer and Aberdeen school districts are among the nine winners of this year's Qwest Teachers and Technology grants.

Each of the winning teachers or teacher teams will receive $10,000 from the Qwest Foundation to create 21st-century learning environments that use real-world technologies to solve real-world problems. All the projects integrate Web 2.0 technologies and the state's standards for educational technology.

Laurie McGovern, a teacher at Pioneer Primary School in the Pioneer School District, will use her grant to help her third grade students educate the community on the ecosystems at risk in the Hood Canal. A team of teachers (Martha Lennier, Sara Schultz, Dana Persson-Zora and Sheryl Woodruff) from Stevens Elementary in Aberdeen will use their grant to help students in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth grades design a school building.
